WISE Award for Arkwright Scholar Supriya
Supriya Gopinath, from Newstead Wood School for Girls received her Arkwright Scholarship on 30th October 2009. Her commitment to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths has also been recognised by WISE. Supriya was awarded with The Advanced Leader Award for STEM presented by The Princess Royal on the 12th November at a ceremony held at The Royal Academy of Engineering. The award is to encourage female students in understanding careers in science and engineering and hopes to promote students to become Leaders for STEM in their school. After completing an application Supriya had the opportunity to interview Ms Kamlah Kew, a Traffic Control engineer from TfL.
Supriya said "It truly was an invaluable opportunity to gain career information and to hear Kamlah's enthusiasm for her profession! I submitted this interview as a written report as well as a film and was lucky enough to be selected to attend the WISE ceremony and have my award presented by Princess Anne: it really was an amazing experience to meet many fascinating people and to be part of such a celebration". New Major Sponsor, The Welding Institute, broadens Scholars' Awareness
TWI’s chief executive Dr Bob John opened the event with a broad introduction to engineering and the endless possibilities for new technology. Dr John used the Beijing ‘water cube’, chondromimetics, lab on a chip, current environmental challenges and possible solutions, the European extra large telescope and laser technology as primary examples of recent engineering discoveries and challenges.
Students and parents experienced a ‘hands on’ forensic engineering workshop with Dr Philippa Moore, one of TWI’s Senior Project Leaders. They all took on the role of air accident investigators for the day, and analysed failed components and a portfolio of evidence to determine the cause of the crash. A tour of TWI’s laboratories, engineering hall and workshops helped to bring to life the vast range of welding and joining technologies and their application to solving engineering challenges in all industry sectors.
“It was an amazingly insightful day and really helped to further my interest in pursuing a future in engineering. It also informed me of the possibilities in different branches of engineering that I would have otherwise not considered”, Arkwright Scholar’s comments.
